Washington, DC On the third anniversary of the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, President Joe Biden’s campaign criticized former President Donald Trump for his refusal to take an Illinois loyalty pledge promising not to support overthrowing the government.
When Trump and his campaign registered for the Illinois primary ballot this year, they did not willingly accept the loyalty oath, according to a Saturday report from WBEZ/Chicago Sun-Times. In 2016 and 2020, the former president took the oath of office.
Candidates who take the oath affirm that they “do not directly or indirectly teach or advocate the overthrow of the government of the United States or of this state or any unlawful change in the form of the governments thereof by force or any unlawful means.” Biden and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are among the candidates who have completed the pledge.
Additionally, candidates must certify that they oppose communism and refuse to associate with communist groups. According to WBEZ/Chicago Sun-Times, the oath is “a vestige of the red-baiting era of the former U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s.”
According to Michael Tyler, the director of communications for the Biden campaign, “Donald Trump can’t bring himself to sign a piece of paper saying he won’t attempt a coup to overthrow our government,” the statement was released on Saturday. “We know he’s deadly serious, because three years ago today he tried and failed to do exactly that.”
A federal criminal charge against Trump is pending due to his purported attempts to rig the 2020 election.Georgia is also considering an indictment against the former president and eighteen of his friends for allegedly plotting to rig the 2020 election and breaking the state’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations, or RICO, Act.
Instead of providing an explanation for the candidate’s decision to forgo taking the oath, the Trump team released a statement in which they predicted the former president would defeat Biden in the polls.
