The renowned Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki and his Studio Ghibli received their first-ever Golden Globe on Sunday for their film “The Boy and the Heron.”

The movie is the first to win the Golden Globe for best animated feature in a language other than English, and it is partially based on Miyazaki’s early years.

The producer of “The Boy and the Heron,” Toshio Suzuki, who co-founded Studio Ghibli with Hayasaki Miyazaki, was not present to accept the award at the Los Angeles gala, but he noted it came at a nice time.

“I hope the good news of winning an award can bring a smile to everyone’s face, even if it’s just a small one,” Suzuki wrote in a post on X. “Since the beginning of this year, Japan has been hit by a series of tragic earthquakes and accidents. When I hear the reports of many people still waiting for rescue in the disaster areas, I am filled with a sense of despair.”

On New Year’s Day, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Japan, leaving at least 168 dead and over 300 missing. A day later, all 379 passengers and staff members on board were successfully evacuated when a Japan Airlines passenger plane collided with their aircraft on the runway at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, killing five Coast Guard men.

It is believed that “The Boy and the Heron,” which took seven years to complete, may be Miyazaki’s final motion picture. It narrates the tale of a 12-year-old kid who travels into a world where the living and the dead coexist while grieving for his mother after she passes away during World War II.

Since its July premiere in Japan, the movie has made over $137 million globally, topping the box office in North America when it debuted last month.

It faced off against “Wish,” “Elemental,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” and “Suzume” at the Golden Globes.

After winning the Golden Globe for “Spirited Away,” in 2001, Miyazaki would now be eligible to compete for an Academy Award. In 2014, Miyazaki, who is also known for the films “Howl’s Moving Castle,” “Princess Mononoke,” and “My Neighbor Totoro,” was awarded an honorary Oscar.
