TFD – Get the latest updates on the tragic incident in Bastrop County involving a school bus and a concrete truck, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries.

Authorities in Bastrop County, Texas, say that a concrete truck slammed a school bus carrying pre-K students returning from a field trip head-on, killing two individuals, including a young kid.

Sgt. Deon Cockrell of the Texas Department of Public Safety reports that the concrete truck, which was heading in the opposite direction, struck the bus while it was westbound on State Highway 21. Both an adult passenger in the car behind the bus and a youngster aboard the bus perished.

Austin-Travis County EMS stated in a revised post on X that 53 patients in all were assessed on the spot. Six individuals were sent to hospitals in potentially serious conditions, while four patients were taken in critical condition. According to the report, the remaining individuals received minor injuries and were either sent to hospitals or the unification center.

Although the inquiry is still preliminary, Cockrell noted that it does not seem the truck driver was intoxicated.

In a statement to the school community, school superintendent Eric Wright expressed his “heartbreak” over the loss of “a precious little boy.”

Wright added, “There are no words that can express my sorrow for the family of the student, the family of Tom Green Elementary School, and our greater Hays CISD community.” “I am also deeply saddened by the news of the passing of an individual operating a vehicle on the road behind our bus.”

The bus driver, who he said “insisted that medical personnel tend to the children first” despite her own injuries, was also complimented by the superintendent for her actions during the “unspeakable event,” along with the instructors and staff members.

The process of reunifying the school was finished by 6:45 p.m. local time, he continued.
