Huawei has been identified by Nvidia as a top rival in several domains, including the vital manufacturing of processors that underpin AI systems.

In its annual report, the Santa Clara-based company stated on Wednesday that Huawei was a rival in four of the five main business areas it operated in. One of these categories was the provision of hardware and software for graphic processing units (GPUs), which are extensively utilized in generative artificial intelligence.

In certain sectors, AMD (AMD), Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT), and Broadcom (AVGO) are named as additional competitors.

According to a Reuters story, Huawei was named barely two months after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang warned reporters in Singapore that the Chinese tech giant was a “formidable” rival in the production of AI chips.

The world was taken aback last year when the Shenzhen-based company, which manufactures telecom gear and smartphones, unveiled the Mate 60 Pro, a cutting-edge phone with cutting-edge CPUs.

Concerns arose regarding Huawei’s ability to produce the phone given that it has been subject to US sanctions preventing it from accessing 5G technology for the previous four years.

Analysts described the development as a “milestone” accomplishment for China, given that Beijing and Washington are slugging it out for semiconductor technology.

In October 2022, the Biden administration imposed sweeping curbs designed to curtail China’s access to advanced computing chips. Japan and the Netherlands joined the US in early 2023 in limiting the transfer of technology for building chips to China.

Beijing has retaliated. It began an investigation into Micron’s cybersecurity in April 2023 and then prohibited the company from doing business with Chinese firms engaged in significant infrastructure projects. It put export restrictions on two vital raw materials—gallium and germanium—that are essential to the world’s chip manufacturing sector in July.

The Biden administration strengthened regulations on American companies’ ability to sell cutting-edge semiconductors in October 2023.

Concerns about being more entangled in the geopolitical disputes between China and the US have been raised by Nvidia.

As stated in the annual report, it has suffered and may suffer more long-term consequences from additional changes to US export regulations on chips.

“We may be unable to develop replacement products not subject to the licensing requirements in the event of such a change [in US export control rules], effectively excluding us from all or part of the China market, as well as other impacted markets, including the Middle East,” the statement read.

On Wednesday, Nvidia released its earnings results. The three months ended January 28 saw a 769% increase in profits over the same period last year. However, US limitations on semiconductor sales to China hurt the company’s operations.

Nvidia’s chief financial officer, Colette Kress, stated during an earnings call that “growth was strong across all regions except for China, where our data center revenue declined significantly following the US government export control regulations imposed in October [2022].”

Including the graphics cards, data centers are Nvidia’s primary revenue generator. In the fourth quarter, sales from its primary data center business reached a record $18.4 billion, up 409% year over year.

According to her, China’s contribution to the company’s data center revenue in the fourth quarter was “a mid-single-digit percentage,” and this percentage is predicted to remain in “a similar range” for the current quarter.

Regarding the news, Nvidia declined to comment.

Rob McLean and David Goldman of CNN provided further reporting.

Conclusion

The rivalry between Nvidia and Huawei underscores the intense competition in the semiconductor industry amid geopolitical tensions. As US export regulations continue to evolve, the landscape for AI chips and technology remains uncertain. Stay tuned for further developments in this rapidly evolving field.
