The rock group announced on Instagram on Tuesday that over 10,000 applications were received for the available guitarist job. “Currently, there are 8 people working full-time to review each and every one,” stated the post.

This occurs fewer than two weeks after Smashing Pumpkins declared they were looking to add a guitarist to the lineup.

After joining Smashing Pumpkins in 2007 as a guitarist, Jeff Schroeder announced his departure from the group in October. When he joined Smashing Pumpkins more than ten years ago, he remarked at the time that he “had no idea what I was getting into.” He added, “I was at UCLA working on my doctorate in comparative literature when a close friend messaged me and said the Smashing Pumpkins were looking for a guitar player.”

Schroeder posted on Instagram, saying, “As a big fan of the band, I threw myself into the audition.” It turned out to be one of the best choices I’ve ever made. Almost too many amazing memories have been made with the band over the past 16 years to count.”

The group honored him “for his ceaseless dedication,” stating, “Words can not express our gratitude and appreciation for the friend he is, and being there for SP in the good times and the tough times, too.”
