The episode, co-written by actor Brian Dietzen, who plays Dr. Jimmy Palmer, saw Palmer arriving at Ducky’s residence with coffee only to find him dead in bed.
After McCallum passed away in September at the age of 90, the show and the rest of Hollywood were still in the throes of the actors strike. However, Dietzen told Variety that the producers “knew immediately we wanted to do something to honor the person, but also, of course, the character within the universe.”
The show intercut footage of McCallum throughout the hour, but the team also managed to settle a case that Ducky had worked on: assisting the daughter of a deceased Marine who was trying to clear her father’s name after his death.
In one of the clips, Ducky informs Palmer, “Change is the essence of life.”
Subtitled “The Stories We Leave Behind,” Michael Weatherly, a former “NCIS” regular, made a brief appearance as Tony DiNozzo to assist “celebrate a great man” as the episode came to a close. “In memory of our dear friend and colleague David McCallum,” was written on the last card.
Due to the strike-related postponement, CBS used the Super Bowl to promote the premiere of “NCIS,” which debuted on February 12 of its 21st season.
McCallum first came to TV stardom in the US with the spy series “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” which premiered 60 years ago.
