Some of the biggest names in pop and rock from across the world attended the Brit Awards, the premier music award in the United Kingdom, which took place in London on Saturday. They were expecting to take home a trophy or three.
With seven nominations, English singer-songwriter RAYE lead the field of competitors with the most nominations ever at the Brits. She won five Brit Awards, including best new artist, artist of the year, song of the year, and album of the year, almost completely dominating all of her categories. The vocalist of “Escapism” once called her grandma up to the stage to accept one of her many awards. Prior to the event, she had also been awarded songwriter of the year, a first for a songwriter who identifies as female.
Before hitting the mainstream as a solo act, RAYE worked behind the scenes in music, as a songwriter and in production for major artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, John Legend, Ellie Goulding and David Guetta. Last year, when her 2022 song “Escapism” with 070 Shake went popular on TikTok, her debut album “My 21st Century Blues” received a lot of positive feedback.
Kylie Minogue, who won the coveted global icon award and closed the ceremony with a medley of her classics, was another notable attendee at the Brits this year.
The artist of the year nominations this year were Dua Lipa, Arlo Parks, Jessie Ware, Little Simz, and Olivia Dean in addition to RAYE. This is a notable improvement over the field of competitors from the previous year, which lacked a single female-identifying performer.
PinkPantheress, Yussef Dayes, Olivia Dean, Mahalia, and RAYE were all entered in the best new artist category.
