TFD – Discover the latest development as the Department of Justice mandates further prison time for former FBI official Charles McGonigal for accepting foreign funds and his ties to a Russian oligarch.

The US Justice Department said that a former top FBI counterintelligence official who was previously sentenced to federal prison for his involvement with a Russian oligarch has been ordered to serve additional time in a related case involving the acceptance of foreign funds.

Twenty-two-year FBI veteran Charles McGonigal oversaw national security investigations at the FBI’s New York field office. According to the DOJ, McGonigal received $225,000 in cash from an individual with ties to the Albanian government while he was supervising counterintelligence investigations, and as a result, he was sentenced on Friday to 28 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

The lawyer representing McGonigal has been contacted by CNN to provide an update on the new sentence.

In January 2023, the disgraced former high-ranking FBI official was taken into custody at John F. Kennedy International Airport. He was sentenced to 50 months in jail after entering a guilty plea in August to one count of conspiring to violate US sanctions and money laundering for his work for Oleg Deripaska, a wealthy Russian with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He entered a guilty plea in September in a different case in Washington, DC, to hiding hundreds of thousands of dollars he got from a former Albanian intelligence officer and his foreign contacts with the person.

The Department of Justice states that McGonigal’s current term would run consecutively to his previous sentence, amounting to 6.5 years in federal prison.

Conclusion

McGonigal’s extended prison sentence underscores the seriousness of his offenses and highlights the Justice Department’s commitment to holding individuals accountable for their actions, even those in positions of authority.
