An indicted associate of Rudy Giuliani, who participated in the first impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, has been chosen by House Democrats on the Oversight Committee to testify on behalf of the panel on Wednesday, a source with Oversight Committee Democrats told CNN.
In the run-up to the 2020 presidential election, Trump’s representative Lev Parnas, an American of Ukrainian descent, collaborated with Giuliani to try and find negative information about then-candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, in Ukraine. In conjunction with his convictions for campaign finance, wire fraud, and making false statements, Parnas was given a 20-month prison sentence.
The dirt Parnas was selling was accepted by House Republicans, but he has now called it out as absurd.
Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the lead Democrat on the House Oversight panel, stated, “Lev Parnas can debunk the bogus claims at the heart of the impeachment probe and, in the process, explain how the GOP ended up in this degraded and embarrassing place.”
Alongside Parnas, who will be testifying virtually, are Jason Galanis, a federal prisoner currently serving time for his involvement in numerous fraudulent schemes, and Tony Bobulinski, a former business associate of the Biden family who has made critical but unverified accusations against the Bidens. Republicans invited Hunter Biden to testify at this session, but he declined. Republicans had also invited Biden family business associate Devon Archer to testify, but he also did not accept the committee’s invitation, according to a letter obtained by CNN.
The hearing on Wednesday is the only one of its kind since Republicans began looking into the Biden family, and it comes as the disorganized probe into Biden is coming to a standstill and the likelihood of his impeachment is decreasing.
Trump falsely claimed that, while vice president, Joe Biden had corruptly abused his authority to pressure Ukraine into firing a top prosecutor who was looking into the Ukrainian energy company Burisma in order to shield Hunter, who was then serving on the board of the company. Trump used the conspiracy theories advanced by Giuliani and Parnas to support this claim.
The Biden-Burisma conspiracy theory served as the cornerstone for the Republican resistance to Trump’s impeachment in 2019 and continues to be essential to the GOP-led investigation into Biden’s indictment.
Before a former FBI informant was charged with lying about the president and his son’s participation in business dealings with a Ukrainian energy company, Democrats on the Oversight Committee had used Parnas’s earlier testimony to refute the informant’s claims.
Parnas urged House Oversight Chair James Comer to stop his inquiry into the Biden family in a letter he submitted last year, refuting numerous arguments advanced by Republicans.
“With all due respect, Chairman Comer, a wide range of credible sources have repeatedly demonstrated the falsity of the narrative you are seeking for this investigation,” Parnas stated in a July 2023 letter. “There is simply no merit to investigating this matter any further.”
Democrats had been considering calling Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen as their witness before choosing Parnas.
“Cohen could have spoken directly to how Trump used the White House to enrich himself, but Parnas can speak directly to how Trump used sketchy sources to fabricate dirt on Biden,” said a second person familiar with Democrats’ reasoning for selecting Parnas over Cohen, as CNN reported.
Conclusion
Lev Parnas’s testimony sheds light on Trump’s conspiracy tactics and the Biden conspiracy theory, highlighting the complexities of the impeachment probe and the pursuit of truth in politics.
