US State Department issues worldwide security alert due to potential for attacks on LGBTQ+ people and events

TFD – The US State Department has issued a global security notice warning of potential terrorist threats targeting LGBTQI+ individuals and events. American nationals abroad are advised to exercise increased caution, especially during Pride Month, due to the heightened risk of violence inspired by foreign terrorist organizations.

In Short

  • A global security notice from the US State Department warns of possible terrorist threats targeting LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • The notice advises American nationals abroad to be extra cautious, especially during Pride Month.
  • Similar warnings were issued by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security.
  • Last year, plots targeting LGBTQ+ events were thwarted in Austria and Idaho.

A global security notice was released by the US State Department on Friday in response to possible terrorist threats targeting LGBTQI+ individuals and events.

The Department of State warns American nationals living abroad to proceed with extra caution because there is a chance of terrorist attacks, protests, or other violent acts directed at American citizens and interests. The notice stated, “The Department of State advises U.S. citizens abroad to exercise increased caution as they are aware of the increased potential for violence against LGBTQI+ persons and events inspired by foreign terrorist organizations.”

The notice is sent out two weeks before to June 1st, which is Pride Month. The government advised US nationals to exercise caution when visiting tourism destinations, “particularly Pride celebrations and venues frequented by LGBTQI+ persons.”

Similar warnings were issued earlier this week by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, cautioning that as Pride Month draws near, LGBTQ+ gatherings and venues may be targeted by foreign terrorist organizations and their supporters.

A conspiracy to attack Vienna’s annual Pride Parade was successfully thwarted by police in Austria last year, and three suspects—ages 14, 17, and 20—connected to Islamic extremism were taken into custody. In the same year, the Human Rights Campaign announced a national state of emergency for LGBTQ+ Americans, a first in its forty-year history as an advocacy organization for the LGBTQ+ community.

Additionally, the previous year, twelve individuals who were allegedly connected to a White supremacist organization were detained, preventing them from rioting during an Idaho pride event.
