Captain of Team India Gautam Gambhir says he ‘would love’ to be the coach: There is no greater honor

Gautam Gambhir, a former batter for India, expressed his desire to coach the country’s men’s national cricket team, saying it would be the greatest honor of his career. Speaking to young sports fans at an event held at Medeor Hospital in Abu Dhabi, Gambhir—who most recently guided KKR to their third IPL championship—shared his goals and vision for Indian cricket.

According to information obtained, Gambhir will take over as head coach of the senior men’s national cricket team of India, succeeding Rahul Dravid. The former opener who won the World Cup is prepared to assume the role despite his recent dedication to the Knight Riders IPL team. With Dravid’s term ending in June, the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) released a call for applications for the top position. Applications for the post of head coach have to be submitted by May 27.

“I’d want to be the Indian team’s coach. Being a national team coach is the greatest honor there is. You are representing 140 crore Indians and more across the globe as well and when you represent India, how can it get bigger than that?”, Gambhir was quoted as saying by ANI while responding to a question from a student about his coaching ambitions.

Gambhir stressed the need for teamwork in order to succeed on the global arena, bringing up the highly anticipated Cricket World Cup in particular. It is the 140 crore Indians who will contribute to India’s World Cup victory, not myself. India will win the World Cup if everyone begins to pray for us and we begin to play and represent them,” he said.

The former opening batsman discussed his approach to the game and emphasized the value of playing fearlessly. “The most important thing is to be fearless,” declared Gambhir, underscoring the importance of confidence and bravery for any squad striving for excellence.

A major part of India’s victory in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, Gambhir’s tenure with the Indian cricket team is legendary. Known for his perseverance and tactical sense, his possible coaching position might benefit the present team much by providing a plethora of knowledge and expertise.

In 2022, Gambhir made his coaching debut at the top level with the Lucknow IPL team. Under Andy Flower’s coaching, the squad made it to the playoffs in his two years there. After that, Gambhir went back to work for KKR, where he guided a very talented team to their third IPL title. The players, other support staff members, and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan all applauded his services in clarifying roles and bringing the Knight Riders together around a shared objective.
