Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi had a record-breaking evening.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and Argentine icon scored a goal and provided five assists as Inter Miami defeated the New York Red Bulls 6-2 on Saturday night. In the process, he broke three Major League Soccer records.

MLS records were set by the five assists, five goals, and five assists in a half.

Messi, who was named the April MLS Player of the Month, has now contributed a goal and an assist in six straight league games.

Inter Miami overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit with six goals in a row, led by three goals from Luis Suárez and two from Matias Rojas. Messi and Suárez now have a league-leading 10 goals each, helping keep Inter Miami (7-2-3, 24 points) atop the Eastern Conference.

Miami’s winning streak now stands at six. Following a 4-0 loss in New York on April 20, in which Messi was sidelined due to an injury, the streak got underway.

Rojas’ equalizer in the 48th minute gave Miami the lead and started the onslaught. Messi found Rojas, whose left-footed shot went under the crossbar, with a centering pass.

After that, Suárez touched the ball to a streaking Messi, who beat New York goalkeeper Carlos Coronel with a 15-yard strike.

In the 62nd minute, Rojas doubled the score with his second goal, assisted by Messi.

In the 69th minute, Messi then assisted former Barcelona teammate Suárez in scoring his first goal.

Before Emil Forsberg’s penalty kick in stoppage time for the Red Bulls (4-2-5, 17 points) put an end to the game, Suárez scored again in the 75th and 81st minutes.

Early on, New York maintained possession and eventually took advantage of a defensive lapse by Miami, which set up Dante Vanzeir’s goal in the thirty-first minute. José Carmona shot hard, hitting the far post after cutting deep into the right wing of the wide area. From fifteen yards out, an unmarked Vanzeir recovered the deflection and converted.

In the 24th minute, Messi had his sole chance to score throughout the first half, but Coronel blocked his attempt from the edge of the penalty area.

Jordi Alba, Messi’s former Barcelona teammate, missed his third consecutive game due to a hamstring injury.

Next Saturday, both clubs will play in the MLS again. The Red Bulls will host New England, and Inter Miami will travel to CF Montreal.
