Rome More and more signs point to Paul Pogba’s career coming to an early conclusion.

Once regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, Pogba was banned by Italy’s anti-doping court on Thursday for a maximum of four years after testing positive for testosterone during his time at Juventus.

The positive result was announced in September, stemming from an exam that was carried out on Aug. 20 after Juventus’ game at Udinese. Pogba did not play in the Serie A match but was on the bench.

Pogba chose not to enter into a plea agreement with Italy’s anti-doping agency, so the matter was heard by the anti-doping court in that nation. Because Italy’s privacy regulations prevented the punishment from being made public, a person with intimate knowledge of the case confirmed the verdict to The Associated Press under the condition of anonymity.

In a statement, Pogba expressed his opinion that “the verdict is incorrect.”

It could take a full year for a CAS verdict — at least that’s the typical timeline unless one party pushes for a fast-track process and the other side agrees to it.

Under the international anti-doping code, four-year penalties are usual; however, they can be shortened if an athlete can demonstrate that their doping was accidental, if contamination caused a positive test, or if they offer investigators “substantial assistance.”

Pogba was renowned for his adaptability, strength, and goal-scoring instincts. In 2016, after his return to Manchester United, the team paid Juventus a then-record-breaking 105 million euros ($113 million) in transfer fees.

Pogba rejoined Juventus in 2022 but struggled with injuries, playing in only six Serie A matches last season and two this season. He was ruled out of France’s run to the 2022 World Cup final due to a knee injury.

Pogba scored in France’s 4-2 victory over Croatia in the World Cup final, contributing to the team’s victory. Between 2012 and 2016, he participated in 178 Juventus games.

“As a professional athlete, I would never use prohibited substances to improve my performance, and I have never disrespected or deceived teammates or fans of any team I have played for or against,” stated Pogba.

Pogba’s Juventus deal was supposed to expire in June 2026, but it may now be ended sooner. Regarding the sentence, the Turin club did not immediately respond.

The doping case follows a police investigation ongoing in France into allegations that Pogba was targeted by extortionists — including his older brother Mathias, who has denied any wrongdoing.

Conclusion

The doping ban dealt to Paul Pogba not only jeopardizes his illustrious career but also raises questions about integrity and fair play in professional sports. As the football world grapples with this revelation, it underscores the importance of maintaining the sanctity of the game and upholding stringent anti-doping measures.
