Mark your calendars: Tesla CEO Elon Musk suggested this afternoon that his electric automaker is going all-in on autonomous vehicle tech—and that Tesla’s robotaxi will be unveiled on August 8.

The statement, which Musk made on X on Friday afternoon, brought an end to an odd day of reports and counterreports that left Tesla’s shares plunging six points during the day before rising in after-hours trade. Reuters revealed earlier in the day that Tesla had abandoned long-term intentions to create an electric car that was accessible to the general public. Many believe that the “next generation” car is essential to the survival of the electric automaker, particularly as the EV market becomes more competitive. Instead, the news agency reported, Tesla would focus on building a robotaxi, which would use much of the same hardware as the low-cost vehicle.

Musk, however, signed onto X to refute at least some of the Reuters report. He posted, “Reuters is lying (again),” although he didn’t say what the news organization had misreported. Hours later, he seemed to confirm part of the report by posting that Tesla’s next product release would focus on robotaxis.

There are several reasons why the apparent shift is unexpected.

For years, Tesla has made promises about fully autonomous technology, but it hasn’t delivered. Tesla promised in 2016 that all of its cars would be equipped with the hardware needed for self-driving, enabling owners to take naps or even drive their cars across the nation by themselves.

That year, Musk published a “master plan” in which he described a (still) futuristic scenario in which Tesla owners could lend out their self-driving cars to others. Customers will “be able to add your car to the Tesla shared fleet just by tapping a button on the Tesla phone app and have it generate income for you while you’re at work or on vacation,” he said, “once true self-driving is approved by regulators.” In 2019, Musk promised an assembled group of investors that the carmaker would have “over a million Tesla cars on the road with full self-driving hardware” the following year. That was not the case.

On the five-point autonomy scale, Tesla’s driver assistance technology, known as Full Self-Driving, is merely a “level 2,” which means that the vehicle can only drive itself under the supervision of a driver. The most recent self-driving software upgrade from Tesla is the first that the carmaker has not designated as “beta.”

Nevertheless, the US transportation safety authority, the National Transportation Safety Board, has harshly condemned Tesla’s driver assistance technology. The country’s top road safety agency conducted a two-year inquiry that ended late last year, finding that Tesla’s technology may be abused by drivers because it didn’t need them to drive attentively. Through over-the-air software updates, Tesla distributed repairs to customers despite stating that company disagreed with the authorities’ interpretation. According to Tesla, using its driver assistance functions makes driving safer than doing it yourself.

Furthermore, within the past five years, other manufacturers of autonomous vehicles have encountered significant growth challenges. A technology that was formerly hailed as being “just around the corner” turned out to be far more difficult and costly than anticipated. Only a few significant companies are left today, years after the majority of significant auto and tech giants promised self-driving software. The Google spinoff Waymo only offers paid taxi rides in two cities—Phoenix and San Francisco—after billions of dollars in dedicated research and development and more than 7 million miles driven.
