In a press conference on Friday, the Arkansas State Police said that three persons had died and ten others had been injured in a shooting at a grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas.

Among the ten injured are two law enforcement officers. Travis Eugene Posey, 44, the alleged gunman, was also hurt and taken into custody, according to the officials.

According to a news statement from the Arkansas State Police, Posey, a resident of New Edinburg, is anticipated to face three counts of capital murder. Additional charges are still pending.

Mike Hagar, the Secretary of Public Safety and Director of Arkansas State Police, stated at the press conference that the police initially received reports about an active shooter at the Mad Butcher grocery shop at approximately 11:30 a.m. local time.

As soon as they arrived, law officers opened fire on the “lone suspect.”

Hagar states that neither the suspect’s nor the police’ wounds are thought to be life-threatening. “The situation is secured…contained,” he said. Threats to the community are not currently present.

He stated, “The remaining civilian injuries range from extremely critical to non-life threatening.

After exchanging gunfire with law police, Posey was “treated for non-life-threatening injuries, released to ASP custody, and transported to the Ouachita County Detention Center,” according to the release from ASP. It’s unclear at this time if Posey has hired legal representation.

Data from the Gun Violence Archive, which, defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people are shot, excluding the gunman, shows that at least 234 mass shootings have occurred in the United States in 2024. The Gun Violence Archive reports that since last Friday, there have been 21 mass shootings around the nation as a result of the increased summer heat.

Rodriguez noticed people fleeing the scene shortly after the suspect started shooting more frequently. After then, he heard sirens and witnessed police and ambulances pulling up to the area.

The front windows of the Mad Butcher grocery store, according to Rodriguez, were shattered, looking as though someone had “shot open” them.

The Mad Butcher’s meat manager, Matthew Gill, told that a man entered the business brandishing a shotgun and ended up becoming engaged in gunfire with police.

Fordyce City Council Member Roderick Rogers, some people sought refuge in a cooler within the grocery store during the shooting. He said that at the time of the shooting, he was in the store talking on the phone with someone.

As Rogers put it, “Man, that was bad.”

The council member claimed to have spoken with gunshot survivors who “are traumatized.”

He continued, “At the moment, we are attempting to set up some counseling and everything.”
