According to an arrest warrant affidavit, a former Atlanta police officer is suspected of shooting and killing a Lyft driver this week. Following the incident, the officer allegedly informed a witness that he thought the driver was kidnapping him.
According to a press release from the Atlanta Police Department, Union City Police detained Atlanta police officer Koby Minor on Wednesday. Later that day, Minor decided to leave the department.
After shooting his Lyft driver, Minor was charged with homicide and aggravated assault, according to a Union City Police Department press statement.
Reginald Folks, the driver of the Lyft, was recognized by the cops and was declared deceased on the spot. He was shot in the head, according to the affidavit.
In a statement provided to TFD, Lyft said, “Our hearts are with Mr. Folks’ loved ones as they confront this unspeakable tragedy, and we have reached out to offer our support during this difficult time.” “We have permanently banned the rider’s account from the Lyft community and stand ready to assist law enforcement with any investigation.”
According to the affidavit, Minor was observed waving his hand on the side of Stonewall Tell Road in Union City by a bystander who then called the police.
Minor told the passerby he believed he was getting kidnapped by Folks, according to the affidavit.
Minor told authorities that he had left another police officer’s house that evening and boarded a Lyft. He informed the police that Folks was speaking in an unidentified language on the phone while using his car’s Bluetooth, and Minor claimed to have “heard what he thought was another voice in his ear talking to him but did not say what the voice said.”
After asking Folks to stop the automobile, Minor told the police, but Folks persisted in driving. Minor attempted to unlock and open the door when they got to a red light, but he was unable.
He continued by saying Minor shot him as everyone turned around and tried to reach into the rear seat. He fired about three shots, shattered the car’s window, and got out.
In the Fulton County Jail is a minor.
TFD is unable to ascertain whether Minor has retained legal counsel.
Minor was employed by the Atlanta Police Department in 2018, and according to a department statement, he was on unpaid administrative leave at the time of his arrest this week. The statement did not explain the cause of his earlier arrest in Milton in December 2023, but it did result in the removal of his department-issued firearm.
