Authorities said that 26 barges, the most of which were carrying dry cargo, broke loose late Friday night and drifted down the Ohio River without control, causing significant damage to a marina near Pittsburgh.

Following the barges’ escape, two bridges in the Pittsburgh region, around 2.5 miles apart, were closed.

Just after midnight, McKees Rocks police said that the McKees Rocks Bridge had been closed due to “an abundance of caution.”

Regarding the barges, police stated, “We are not willing to take the risk, but they may or may not come into contact with sub-structure.”

Pittsburgh city officials also reported that rail traffic was suspended on the rail bridge leading to Brunot Island and that the West End Bridge was stopped in both directions.

The city claims that there were no dangerous materials on the ships. According to the news release, 23 of the 26 unsecured barges were loaded and transporting dry material, including coal.

As per a press release issued by the City of Pittsburgh, Brunot Island discovered eleven of the barges and pinned them against the river bank. There was a tugboat holding them.

According to the city, six have crossed the Emsworth Dam and fourteen have proceeded down the river.

According to the announcement, Peggy’s Harbor, a family-run full-service marina on the Ohio River, sustained damage but no injuries have been reported. The extent of the marina’s devastation is not entirely evident.

According to the news release from Pittsburgh officials, “Campbell Transportation Company owns or operates the barges, which are located on the left descending bank of the Ohio River, just downstream from the West End Bridge.”

The city claimed that first responders in the vicinity, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Coast Guard have all been informed.

When “it is determined that it is safe to do so,” the closed bridges will reopen, according to authorities.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed two weeks ago after being struck by a cargo ship, killing six construction workers and placing commuters and workers in a precarious situation. The closing of the bridge coincides with this incident.

We will be updating this story as it develops.

Conclusion

The barge accident highlights the potential risks associated with river traffic and the importance of swift response measures. As authorities work to assess and mitigate damages, ongoing updates will provide crucial information to affected areas and commuters.
