According to federal prosecutors, eight men have been accused with stealing beer valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars from railyards and warehouses over the course of the previous two years, primarily Corona and Modelo that were delivered from Mexico.
Jose Cesari, the suspected leader, turned himself in to police on Thursday morning, CNN was informed by US Attorney Damian Williams’ office in the Southern District of New York. It took some time for information regarding his arraignment and attorney to become accessible.
An unsealed indictment claims that the “Beer Theft Enterprise” operated from July 2022 to March 2024, committing dozens of thefts from beverage distribution centers and railyards in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, usually at night.
According to the indictment, the guys involved broke the locks on the railroad wagons and the fences around the warehouses in order to obtain unauthorized entry and commit the crimes.
The indictment states that the stolen beer was subsequently transported to the Bronx, where it was “inspected and then made available for sale,” with the enterprise members receiving “hundreds of dollars for the night’s work.”
In a statement announcing the accusations on Wednesday, Williams claimed that the business “operated brazenly” and that its members “filled U-Haul box trucks to the brim with cases of beer.”
An Instagram post by Cesari had a train as the backdrop, text that said, “Need workers who want to make money,” an emoji of a moneybag, and a “yes” or “no” button, according to the indictment.
Cesari “robbed at gunpoint a railroad car stationed in Fresh Pond Yard in Queens, New York” once, the indictment states in April 2023.
Cesari is facing accusations related to theft and firearms in addition to the conspiracy to steal from international or interstate shipments by carrier. Along with further counts, several of the seven individuals are also accused of conspiracy.
