A big group had gathered in downtown Indianapolis on Saturday night when a gunshot occurred, injuring at least seven minors between the ages of 12 and 17, according to authorities.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were on patrol when they heard “several shots actively being fired” close to the Circle Centre Mall at around 11:30 p.m. local time.
Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered “a large group of juveniles,” six of whom had sustained gunshot wounds, according to Indianapolis Police Deputy Chief Tanya Terry, who spoke to reporters on Sunday morning.
Terry stated that all of the injured children were sent to nearby hospitals, and that a seventh victim eventually showed up at a nearby hospital. The victims’ conditions are all stable.
It’s unknown how many persons opened fire or what precipitated the shooting. As of Sunday morning, no suspects were in the custody of Indianapolis police.
Police believe multiple firearms were involved and are investigating the scene, Terry said.
Terry stated, “We have a situation where young people are resolving conflict with gun violence, and it has to stop. It is extremely concerning that so many of our young people have been victims of gun violence this evening.”
