Although the reason for the outages is yet unknown, law enforcement agencies in at least four states reported 911 service interruptions on Wednesday evening. Nevertheless, most of the service has already been restored.

Numerous cities in South Dakota, Texas, Nebraska, and Nevada experienced outages reported by the authorities, who in some cases advised citizens in need of help to text 911 or give a landline call. But within hours, most of the outages had been fixed, even in places like Las Vegas, South Dakota’s Rapid City and Sioux Falls.

Some agencies, including those in Del Rio, Texas, and Douglas and Chase counties, Nebraska, the former of which includes Omaha, had not yet confirmed that service had been restored as of Thursday morning.

Officials have not detailed a cause for the 911 service interruptions, and they have not been found to be malicious. The FCC acknowledged on X that it was “aware of reports of outages related to 911 and we are currently investigating.”

However, given the findings of a Department of Homeland Security assessment last week that found emergency services are susceptible to cyberattacks and that the use of personal data stolen during those ransomware attacks “poses a persistent criminal threat to victims,” the outages raise concerns about the vulnerability of the country’s 911 infrastructure.

The study claims that these kinds of attacks have interfered with local police agencies and 911 networks. It also emphasized how difficult it is to defend emergency service networks against hackers because they are frequently “interconnected.”

The evaluation also discovered that after infiltrating a target’s system, ransomware perpetrators “routinely leak, sell, or further exploit a victim’s data” for nefarious purposes.

Important infrastructure businesses and local law police receive bulletins such as the DHS evaluation.

During outages, agencies suggest using landlines and messages as backup plans.

The disturbances became apparent on Wednesday night when organizations such as the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department declared that they were having trouble communicating with the public and advised them to text 911 instead of phoning.

Despite the department’s original claim that it had no timeframe for returning service, the outage was fixed in roughly two hours.

Authorities were able to get in touch with callers to provide aid since they could see the mobile numbers of those who had dialed 911, according to a post on X. Calls to its non-emergency line and calls made from landlines were not functioning during the outage.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety, which had earlier said in a statement that it was “aware of a 911 service interruption throughout the state,” also declared that service had been restored for the state’s 911 system.

In a similar vein, the department reported during the outage that citizens in need could still call emergency services by using non-emergency lines, but texting 911 was still “operating in most locations.”

On their own Facebook pages, officials from Rapid City and Sioux Falls also announced the restoration of 911 services. Residents are advised by the Rapid City Police Department to “only utilize 911 services if an emergency situation exists.” According to the City of Sioux Falls, citizens can now text or call 911 in an emergency.

The City of Del Rio Police Department in Texas stated that it was aware of a “major cellular carrier” outage that was impacting citizens’ ability to contact 911, stressing that “the carrier, and not the City of Del Rio systems,” is the problem. If residents could not get emergency services on their cell phones, they were instructed to call 911 from a landline “or another carrier.”

Additionally, some areas of Nebraska, notably Chase County, reported outages. Officials in the state’s capital city of Lincoln, however, told CNN their 911 system was operational and not affected.

In a Facebook post, Chase County stated, “911 is down across the State of Nebraska for all cellular carriers except T-Mobile again.” “911 can still be reached through landlines.”
