According to the chief medical officer of the hospital, a car crashed into the emergency room of an Austin, Texas, medical center on Tuesday night, killing the driver and injuring at least five others.

In a news conference on Wednesday, Austin Police Department spokesperson Ariel Crumes stated, “This investigation is in its early and preliminary stages, however at this time there is no indication that this was an intentional act, nor does it indicate that the driver suffered from a medical episode.”

Michelle Holloway,57, was the driver’s identity, according to Crumes.

Three people and two children were hurt when Holloway’s car slammed into the waiting area of the emergency center, and they were sent to nearby hospitals for medical attention, according to Crumes.

Officials had earlier stated that the motorist was freed and received CPR before passing away at the scene.

Additional information about the crash’s possible cause and the driver’s possible speed was withheld by the police.

Chief Medical Officer Peter DeYoung of St. David’s North Austin Medical Center stated that hospital employees banded together to assist throughout the chaos.

He stated that the car was still in “Drive” when it initially collided with the lobby. DeYoung stated on Wednesday that three hospital staff members “put their lives in danger and stopped the car from running and did their best to preserve life for that driver.”

The chief medical officer said that the car struck a “very large aquarium” at the hospital, which probably absorbed the impact and helped preserve lives.

According to DeYoung, three medical staff members had “minor injuries.”

As Stephen Hughes heard a huge noise and assumed a car had smashed into the building, he was at the hospital waiting for his wife to emerge from surgery.

He told CNN, “At first, I thought it was an explosion.” “After that, I noticed smoke emanating from the ER entrance and heard screaming.”

A video of the terrified scenario shows people running across the emergency room lobby as the car’s tires screeched. Hospital personnel immediately started responding to the injured once bystanders were removed from the scene, according to Hughes.

Although there was little structural damage, DeYoung noted that the hospital only accepted walk-in patients for the emergency room on Tuesday night, with ambulances being diverted to other locations.

By Wednesday, DeYoung reported that as of earlier that morning, the hospital had resumed operations and was open to EMS transports.

Further details have been added to this story.
