According to the Gila River Police Department’s Facebook page, the shooting happened at around two in the morning local time after officers were called to a “disturbance at a home.” The Gila River Indian Community, an Indigenous reserve 35 miles southeast of Phoenix, is where the incident took place.

A “large crowd” was reportedly involved in the disturbance, which resulted in multiple gunshots.

Four additional people and two Gila River police officers were also hit by gunfire, according to the authorities.

Both Officer Joshua Briese and an unidentified third party passed away as a result of their wounds.

The other cop is still in the hospital with a severe but stable condition. According to authorities, the other three injured people are also receiving medical attention at hospitals.

Officer Briese had been with the police for less than a year and was still undergoing field training.

The police department released a statement saying, “Our hearts and prayers are with these police officers, their families, and everyone impacted by this tragic incident.”

To further investigate the event, the department is collaborating with the FBI.
