Governor Ned Lamont announced that a major section of I-95 in southeast Connecticut will remain closed for the duration of the weekend, if not longer, as workers disassemble and reconstruct an overpass that was damaged when a gas truck caught fire on Thursday morning.
“It is not safe for traffic to use the road at this time due to the fire from this morning’s accident that caused significant structural damage to an overpass on I-95 in Norwalk,” Lamont stated in a statement released on Thursday. He issued a state of emergency on Thursday following the collision.
By declaring an emergency, we will be able to respond to this situation more quickly and with fewer resources,” Lamont stated.
The governor continued, saying that I-95 close to exit 15 in Norwalk “will remain closed at least through the weekend.” “While the highway is still closed, I strongly advise everyone to avoid this area for at least the next few days and to keep an eye out for updates.
With a population of over 90,000, Norwalk is located approximately 40 miles northeast of New York City and 30 miles southwest of New Haven, Connecticut.
