Park rangers at Lake Mead National Recreation Area are asking for the public’s assistance in locating two visitors who were seen on camera demolishing historic rock formations.
In the video, two tourists can be seen pushing large sandstone slabs to the ground while scaling massive, russet-colored rock formations on the park’s Redstone Dune Trail. As the stone falls and turns into dust, a small girl lets out a scream.
The irrevocable damage to the federally protected structures is caused by the sand dunes that are 140 million years old and have been formed over time. John Haynes, a spokesman for the recreation area, described the destruction as “appalling.”
“Why in the world would you damage such a lovely area? One of my favorite spots in the park is where they’re up there, completely ruining it. That’s not something I understand,” Haynes said to CNN station KVVU.
KVVU claims that the footage was shot on April 7 in the evening. Park rangers encouraged anyone who happened to be on the route at the time or who might know something to report it.
The recreation area stated on social media that the men are suspected of vandalism. Haynes told KVVU that if apprehended, the suspects might be subject to jail time, heavy fines, or federal penalties.
Stretching across the border between Nevada and Arizona, the expansive recreation area spans 1.5 million acres and features two essential reservoirs, canyon trails, and stunning mountain views. The park’s 6 million annual visitors are mostly drawn to the Lake Mead reservoir for its water activities, but in recent years, the severe drought in the West has caused the lake’s water levels to drop sharply, exposing multiple sets of human remains and sunken boats.
Owing to the park’s enormous size, tourists contribute significantly to rangers’ ability to monitor the region. Haynes urged guests to record any strange activity on camera and report it to the park’s management.
Haynes stated, “It’s really important that you just let us know.”
