Federal authorities have launched a criminal investigation into last month’s ship crash that destroyed Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge and killed six people, according to a US official familiar with the matter.
According to the official, the criminal inquiry into the accident and whether the crew neglected to notify a previous problem with the vessel that caused it to delay its departure is being handled by the FBI and the US Coast Guard.
In a statement released on Monday, the FBI said, “The FBI is present aboard the cargo ship Dali conducting court authorized law enforcement activity.
The probe was initially reported by The Washington Post.
Baltimore is investigating who may be to blame for demolishing the bridge that 30,000 residents of Maryland depended on on a daily basis and obstructing a canal that is essential to the region’s economy.
“The City of Baltimore will take decisive action through this engagement to hold accountable all entities accountable for the Key Bridge tragedy, including the manufacturer of the M/V Dali, its owner, charterer, manager/operator, and any other potentially liable third parties.”
Mayor Brandon Scott said in a statement on Monday, “Today, the City of Baltimore announced a partnership with the Philadelphia law firm Saltz Mongeluzzi Bendesky Trial Lawyers and the national complex issues and trial firm DiCello Levitt to launch legal action to hold the wrongdoers responsible and to mitigate the immediate and long-term harm caused to Baltimore City residents.
Programs to assist the victims’ relatives, affected businesses, and employees have also been announced by the mayor.
Around 1:30 a.m. on March 26, a large cargo ship known as the Dali struck the bridge and lost power, causing the bridge to collapse.
Six construction workers lost their lives when they fell into the Patapsco River while fixing potholes on the bridge. Three of the six killed have been found dead.
The 213 million-pound ship lost power and collided with the 47-year-old bridge; the National Transportation Safety Board has been looking into the cause of this. The NTSB stated last week that the investigation has been concentrated on engine room equipment.
The catastrophe has also affected thousands of workers in and around the Port of Baltimore and stopped cargo operations in the region.
By the end of May, the US Army Corps of Engineers hopes to reopen the crash-affected canal.
We will be updating this story as it develops.
