TFD – A suspect has been detained after a shooting at Rochester Hills’ Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad left at least eight people injured. The incident, which took place Saturday evening, saw a rapid police response and resulted in victims being transported to various hospitals. The community is reeling from this random act of violence.

A suspect is detained inside a house surrounded by police close to the crime scene after at least eight people were shot at a leisure area in Rochester Hills, Michigan, on Saturday, according to the police.

Following the shooting at Rochester Hills’ Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard stated during a press conference on Saturday night that the victims had “varying kinds of injuries” and were sent to several hospitals.

The sheriff said he knew at least one person was out of surgery and “did well,” but he did not have any other information regarding the severity of the injuries.

About 27 miles to the north of Detroit is Rochester Hills.

According to the officials, at least two of the victims are minors. According to Bouchard, one of the victims was eight years old; he added that he was unable to speculate on the ages of the other victims. The sheriff emphasized that the scenario is evolving “by the second” and that the information is preliminary.

Authorities initially stated there were nine, “maybe ten,” injured shooting victims during a press conference on Saturday.

Following the shooting, Governor Gretchen Whitmer stated in a statement on X that she is in communication with local authorities.

She wrote, “I am devastated to hear about the shooting in Rochester Hills.” “We are keeping an eye on the situation and keeping in contact with local officials as updates come in.”

“It’s heartbreaking to see this happen here; Rochester Hills is a great community,” stated Mayor Bryan Barnett.

Around 5:11 p.m., the first 911 call was placed informing the authorities of the event. According to Bouchard, a sergeant in Rochester Hills was alerted to a new technology that safely transmits 911 calls to emergency personnel. The sergeant was at the scene in less than two minutes, even before the call was routed.

Three empty magazines and a handgun were found by the authorities at the scene.

According to Bouchard, the guy appeared to have come up to the recreation area, got out of a car, and started shooting from around 20 feet away before repeatedly reloading.

According to the sheriff, the defendant fired “potentially 28 times.” He continued, saying that the act seemed random and that the motive for the attack has not yet been established by the authorities.

Contained suspect in a house with cops around them

The sheriff stated that a person who authorities assume is being held at a residence about 0.5 miles from the crime scene, which is cordoned off by law enforcement, is under arrest.

According to Bouchard, authorities are deploying more resources, including as SWAT squads and armored cars, to support the responding officers.

“We are trying to talk to that person without response but we, again, believe he is contained there,” he said. “.. We are in the process of getting a search warrant for that address.”

If someone is taking refuge somewhere close, the sheriff requested them to avoid the area and advised those who were at the parks to return home.

Authorities did not know who the suspect was until they conducted a “quick investigation” and used evidence from the crime scene to discover who they thought was involved.

The sheriff stated, “There was a vehicle that matched what had been described as a vehicle leaving the scene.” “We quickly set up a perimeter, and it appears that the deputies on the scene saw or heard the person they are attempting to contact.”

According to Bouchard, investigators think there might be other weapons in the house, but it’s not known if the suspect has access to them.

The town is still in shock from the 2021 shooting at a high school in Oxford, which is 15 miles north of Rochester Hills, that left four students dead, the sheriff said, referring to the crime as a “gut punch.

“We still don’t fully understand what transpired at Oxford, and we now have to deal with another enormous tragedy,” he remarked.

Conclusion

The Rochester Hills shooting underscores the unpredictable nature of such violent incidents and the urgent need for community vigilance and swift law enforcement response. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the victims and understanding the motive behind this senseless act. The Rochester Hills community, still healing from past tragedies, must come together once again in the face of adversity. Stay informed, stay safe, and support efforts for peace and security in our neighborhoods.
