Authorities in northern Minnesota say they are looking for two people who vanished after canoeing over Curtain Falls.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Iron Lake near the border of Canada at 7:21 p.m. Saturday, as stated in a press statement. Two canoes had gone over Curtain Falls in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, the sheriff’s office said. One canoeist was badly injured and two are missing.

According to the sheriff’s office, one injured person and one unharmed person were rescued shortly after midnight using a helicopter. According to the sheriff’s office, the victim had “serious but not life-threatening injuries” and was taken by air to a hospital.

41-year-old Jesse Melvin Haugen and 40-year-old Reis Melvin Grams were the two persons reported missing.

The events at Curtain Falls have devastated friends, two families, and a wide circle of friends tonight,” the St. Louis County Rescue Squad wrote on Facebook on Sunday night.

Search efforts have been hampered by “many challenges and setbacks,” including “sketchy and unreliable” cell phone and radio communication, according to the Facebook post.

According to the message, rescuers continued their search early the next morning, working “until it was too dark to see, and are sleeping on the ground tonight.”

According to the sheriff’s office, drones and remotely operated vehicles are part of the search effort.

The rescue team said, “Curtain Falls is very difficult to access, and we are heavily depending on our aviation partners to transport equipment, supplies, and personnel in and out of the backcountry.”

According to a news release from the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, another canoeist was discovered deceased in Lake Agnes in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area earlier this month.

St. Louis is situated on the Canadian border with Ontario, Minnesota.
