In Australia’s central Queensland town of Yeppoon, a Member of Parliament (MP) has reported that she was drugged and sexually abused over the weekend.

Labour MP Brittany Lauga, 37, claimed in a Facebook post that she was contacted that same night by multiple women who may have also been drugged in the seaside town of Yeppoon.

“After being drugged and sexually attacked, I went to the Yeppoon police station and Yeppoon hospital early on Sunday morning. Hospital tests verified that I had medications in my body that I had not taken. This stuff had a big effect on me. In a lengthy Facebook post, Lauga stated that a police investigation was in progress.

“This could have happened to anyone and tragically, it does happen to many of us,” Lauga stated.

“Several women who have had the same situation in our community have gotten in touch with me. It’s not acceptable. We ought to be free to socialize in our town without having to worry about getting attacked or drugged,” she continued.

The Guardian reports that a fictitious video purporting to show the alleged assault on Lauga was also circulating on social media and was shot from across the street. Its existence became apparent to her in the hours following her police complaint of the assault.

Lauga said on Facebook that she would need “time to physically and emotionally heal” from the tragedy and asked that people respect her privacy.

I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has offered me assistance. I sincerely appreciate your nice words, deeds, and thoughtful notes.”

She said on Facebook, “If you have any information that may assist the investigation, please tell the police.”

The news portal reports that the Queensland police have opened an inquiry into the Labor Party MP’s alleged sexual assault.

Premier of Queensland Steven Miles said, “Investigations into this matter are ongoing,” and the government was backing Lauga.

“No one should have to go through what Brittany is going through,” he stated.

All I have on my mind is Brittany and her health. Speaking on the matter, Miles stated, “I’ve told Brittany that we’re here to support her, whatever she needs,” according to a report from The Guardian.

Conclusion

The case of Australian MP Brittany Lauga highlights the importance of addressing sexual assault and providing support to victims. Let’s stand together to ensure justice and safety in our communities.
