Beijing: In order to safeguard more than 127 million people, the administration of China’s Guangdong province was forced to establish emergency reaction plans on Sunday due to the potential of hazardous flooding from major rivers, waterways, and reservoirs.

Local weather officials, referring to the situation as “grim,” claimed that portions of rivers and tributaries in the Xijiang and Beijiang river basins are experiencing an unusual surge in water levels, which only occurs once every 50 years, state broadcaster CCTV news reported on Sunday.

According to CCTV, China’s Ministry of Water Resources has issued an emergency warning.

Beginning at 8 p.m. (noon GMT) on Saturday, a 12-hour period of intense rainstorms pounded the province’s central and northern regions, causing damage to cities such as Zhaoqing, Shaoguan, Qingyuan, and Jiangmen, where rescue personnel have been sent.

According to official media, over 45,000 people have been evacuated from Qingyuan, and several power plants in Zhaoqing sustained damage, resulting in power outages in certain areas.

The intense rains in Guangdong caused 1.16 million households to lose electricity overall, according to state-run media.

Monday’s lessons in 1,103 schools in Zhaoqing, Shaoguan, and Qingyuan will be suspended, according to Chinese state radio.

“Please have a look at Huaiji County in Zhaoqing; it’s now a water town. Without power and no signal, the elderly and kids in the country don’t know what to do,” a user on the well-known social media platform Weibo wrote.

A video posted by Hongxing News showed one car being carried along a small Zhaoqing street by raging floodwaters.

Another Weibo user wrote, “Last night, it rained like a waterfall for an hour and a half on the highway driving home.” “There was no way I could see the road.”

Ships were also prohibited from passing through a number of rivers by the authorities in Qingyuan and Shaoguan. The maritime departments dispatched personnel to monitor the situation and provide for emergency tugboats and rescue vessels.

Weather officials issued a warning that many hydrological stations in the province are above water levels. On Sunday, city officials in Guangzhou, the provincial capital with 18 million residents, stated that reservoirs there had above flood limits.

2,609 hydrological stations, or almost 59% of all observation stations, had daily rainfall of more than 1.97 inches, according to the data. 27 hydrological stations in Guangdong were on alert at eight in the morning on Sunday.

Violent gusts akin to hurricanes tore across neighboring Guangxi, west of Guangdong, demolishing structures, according to state television footage. According to CCTV, several areas have also seen significant flooding and hailstones.

Another video showed rescuers attempting to save an elderly person who was clinging to a tree that was partially submerged in floodwaters.

65 landslides were reported in the Guangxi city of Hezhou as of 10 a.m. (2 a.m. GMT), according to official media.

Heavy rain is predicted by weather experts for the Guangxi region, Guangdong, Fujian, and Zhejiang provinces until Monday.
