Sydney — A judge in Australia determined on Monday that a former government adviser had sexually assaulted a coworker in a Parliament House office, rejecting a defamation lawsuit in a case that has sparked national outrage.

A former government employee named Bruce Lehrmann sued Australian media outlet Network Ten for defamation in 2021 after the latter broadcast an interview with his accuser, Brittany Higgins.

In contrast to the “beyond all reasonable doubt” level used in criminal prosecutions, Justice Michael Lee of Australia’s Federal Court said on Monday that he had concluded Lehrmann had sexually assaulted Higgins based on the lesser “balance of probabilities” standard used in civil proceedings.
