In its annual report, the Santa Clara-based company stated on Wednesday that Huawei was a rival in four of the five main business areas it operated in. One of these categories was the provision of hardware and software for graphic processing units (GPUs), which are extensively utilized in generative artificial intelligence.
In certain sectors, AMD (AMD), Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT), and Broadcom (AVGO) are named as additional competitors.
According to a Reuters story, Huawei was named barely two months after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang warned reporters in Singapore that the Chinese tech giant was a “formidable” rival in the production of AI chips.
The world was taken aback last year when the Shenzhen-based company, which manufactures telecom gear and smartphones, unveiled the Mate 60 Pro, a cutting-edge phone with cutting-edge CPUs.
Concerns arose regarding Huawei’s ability to produce the phone given that it has been subject to US sanctions preventing it from accessing 5G technology for the previous four years.

“We may be unable to develop replacement products not subject to the licensing requirements in the event of such a change [in US export control rules], effectively excluding us from all or part of the China market, as well as other impacted markets, including the Middle East,” the statement read.
On Wednesday, Nvidia released its earnings results. The three months ended January 28 saw a 769% increase in profits over the same period last year. However, US limitations on semiconductor sales to China hurt the company’s operations.
Nvidia’s chief financial officer, Colette Kress, stated during an earnings call that “growth was strong across all regions except for China, where our data center revenue declined significantly following the US government export control regulations imposed in October [2022].”
