TFD – The 2024 Tony Awards delivered a night to remember, filled with stunning performances and heartfelt speeches. Notable moments included Daniel Radcliffe and Sarah Paulson’s first-time wins, a powerful reunion performance by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, and Hillary Clinton’s inspiring words on the importance of voting, tied to the musical “Suffs.”

Theater fans worldwide could not have asked for a more spectacular song-and-dance performance than the one that took place on Sunday in New York City during the 2024 Tony Awards.

There were numerous riveting performances and speeches, but a few significant moments really stood out.

Here are a few highlights from this year’s Tony Awards, including first-time winners and pop culture reunions.

Sarah Paulson, Daniel Radcliffe, and other actors receive their first-ever Tony Awards

Daniel Radcliffe, the star of “Harry Potter,” and the other first-time winners had an incredible evening.

Following a joyous rendition of a song from his show “Merrily We Roll Along,” Radcliffe received his first Tony Award for best performance by an actor in a featured role in a musical. During his address, he remarked, “This has been one of the best experiences of my life.”

Jonathan Groff, who costarred with Radcliffe, also took home his first-ever Tony Award for finest performance by an actor in a leading role. Filled with passion, Groff described his involvement in the theater as the “greatest gift and pleasure of my life.”

Sarah Paulson also made history by winning her first-ever Tony Award for “Appropriate,” which goes to the finest actress in a starring play. During her remarks, Paulson expressed gratitude to the cast, crew, and her longtime boyfriend, Holland Taylor.

Among the first-timers were Jeremy Strong, star of “Succession,” and Kecia Lewis, who in her address considered her 40-year journey to the Tony stage.

The reunion of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys

The ensemble of Alicia Keys’ ambitious musical “Hell’s Kitchen” put up a spirited medley of songs from the Grammy-winning show’s Broadway version. Naturally, Keys herself took the stage.

While performing her 2009 hit song “Empire State of Mind,” Keys told the crowd she had to “do something crazy” to honor New York City, her hometown. At that point, Keys’ co-worker on “Empire State of Mind,” Jay-Z, came out to finish the show by rapping his verse.

Two Tony Awards went to “Hell’s Kitchen” on Sunday.

A special night for “The Outsiders” is celebrated by Angelina Jolie and her daughter Vivienne.

The 1967 novel by S.E. Hinton, adapted for the stage as “The Outsiders,” took home four Tony Awards on Sunday, including the much sought-after best musical prize.

Among those who celebrated its accomplishment were lead producer and actress Angelina Jolie and her fifteen-year-old daughter Vivienne. This was after director Danya Taymor was awarded the Tony for outstanding direction of a musical. The mother-daughter pair were seen blotting away tears as she spoke.

Jolie previously disclosed to People that she was motivated to take on the assignment by her daughter.

Kecia Lewis expresses gratitude to her physician

Speaking of funny speeches, first-time Tony Award recipient Kecia Lewis expressed gratitude to her ENT physician for maintaining her vocal range “alive and well.” Lewis took home the prize for “Hell’s Kitchen” outstanding actress in a featured role in a musical.

Earlier this year, at a number of award presentations, some stars expressed gratitude to their publicists and aides, starting a trend of acknowledging the frequently-forgotten members of their teams in acceptance speeches.

Hillary Clinton urges everyone to cast a ballot.

Former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton entered the stage to thunderous applause from the audience before introducing the actors of “Suffs,” the Broadway play she co-produced with Tony Award winner Shaina Taub and Malala Yousafzai. Clinton remarked, “I am very proud of this original American musical because I know how hard it is to make change.”

The Suffragettes, who, according to Clinton, “fought so valiantly for so long to give women in our country the right to vote,” are the subject of the musical. She continued, noting that “we need to be reminded about how important it is to vote” in light of the approaching election.
