TFD – Jake Gyllenhaal returned to “Saturday Night Live” for its Season 49 finale, delighting fans with a cover of Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road.” Despite his lighthearted disappointment at not hosting the upcoming Season 50 premiere, Gyllenhaal shone brightly on stage.

Although Jake Gyllenhaal was “honored” to host the Season 49 finale episode of “Saturday Night Live” this past weekend, he was amusingly unable to hide his mild disappointment at not having been chosen to host the much more glamorous premiere of the cherished sketch show’s 50th season this autumn.

Gyllenhaal performed a cover of Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road” after making an appearance on the Studio 8H stage at 30 Rock in New York on Saturday night. He also made jokes about the number 49, mentioning that it was the number of times Conor McGregor “accidentally punched” him during the filming of the “Road House” reboot.

The cast members of “SNL,” Punkie Johnson, Kenan Thompson, Ego Nwodim, and Devon Walker then joined him, coming out to sing along with Gyllenhaal. Particularly Thompson, who gushed about how the most recent season was “definitely one of the top 48 seasons” of the program, was on point.

After that, Gyllenhaal rejoined the conversation, musing that this “is also the start of a new” journey and that “in many respects, THIS is the genuine first episode of Season 50.” Nwodim quickly shot back, “Nope! No, it’s not.

With a dapper smile, Gyllenhaal remarked, “Had to try.”

Gyllenhaal is hosting “Saturday Night Live” for the third time. Musician Sabrina Carpenter was the guest.

Gyllenhaal served as host twice before, in 2007 and 2022.
