Mike Turner Warns of Russian Propaganda in Congress

Russian propaganda has “absolutely” found its way into Congress, according to House Intelligence Committee Chair Mike Turner, who also claimed that several of his Republican colleagues have repeatedly made misleading statements on the chamber floor.

The Ohio Republican said to TFD’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union” that “it is absolutely true we see, directly coming from Russia, attempts to mask communications that are anti-Ukraine and pro-Russia messages, some of which we even hear being uttered on the House floor.

Turner’s remarks follow House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul’s assertion last week to Puck News that a sizable portion of the Republican base had been “infected” by Russian disinformation.

Turner stated on Sunday that “there are members of Congress today who still incorrectly say that this conflict between Russia and Ukraine is over NATO, which of course it is not.” Turner has been a vocal supporter of sending more aid to beleaguered Ukraine.

The more this propaganda spreads, the harder it will be for us to understand this as a conflict between democracy and authoritarianism, he continued.

In February, the Senate approved a $95.3 billion bill for foreign aid, which included aid for Israel and Ukraine. However, House Speaker Mike Johnson, whose position as the party’s leader is in doubt due to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s attempt to remove him from the speakership, declined to put the bill up for vote right away.

Turner stated on Sunday that he does not think Johnson is in “any danger” of being removed by the “chaos caucus,” citing individuals “who are trying to stop all of the important work in Congress and seeking attention for themselves.”
