Scarlett Johansson claimed that she had turned down OpenAI’s offer to voice their GPT-4o chatbot and expressed her dismay and indignation at the company’s usage of a voice that was strikingly similar to her own.

On Monday (local time), actress Scarlett Johansson announced that she had turned down Open AI’s request to lend her voice to the ChatGPT 4o chatbot. She expressed her shock and indignation at the Artificial Intelligence business using a voice that seemed “so eerily similar” to her own.

In a thorough statement, Johansson stated that her attorneys had requested that the GPT-4o chatbot’s voice of Sky, one of the new voices, be removed by the corporation.

“I was approached by Sam Altman in September of last year with an offer to work for him as the voice of the ChatGPT 4.0 system. He informed me that he thought I could assist customers feel at ease with the seismic change that is occurring between humans and artificial intelligence by speaking up about the system and bridging the gap between tech businesses and creatives. He expressed his belief that people will find solace in my voice,” the actor’s statement to NPR says.

She elaborated, “After much consideration and for personal reasons, I declined the offer” .

“Nine months later, my friends, family and the general public all noted how much the newest system named ‘Sky’ sounded like me” .

The statement added that “When I heard the released demo, I was shocked, angered and in disbelief that Mr. Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends and news outlets could not tell the difference” .

According to Johansson, she was compelled to engage legal representation, and after that, OpenAl “reluctantly agreed to take down the ‘Sky’ voice” after she asked them to clarify the precise steps involved in creating the Sky voice in two letters to Mr. Altman and OpenAl.

The actor, who said there are “questions that deserve absolute clarity”, added, “I look forward to resolution in the form of transparency and the passage of appropriate legislation to help ensure that individual rights are protected.”

The business announced that they want to stop using one of their ChatGPT voices in the meantime. OpenAI said on social media that it is “working to pause” Sky.

“We’ve fielded inquiries concerning our process for selecting the ChatGPT voices, particularly Sky. The business posted on X, “We are working to pause the use of Sky while we address them.”

OpenAI released its latest GPT-4o language model a few days ago, which can chat in real time, adding emotion to its voice as requested.
