Authorities stated on Friday that the suspect in the death of an Augusta University College of Nursing student on the University of Georgia campus in Athens did not know the victim and did not attend classes on the campus.

According to University of Georgia Police Chief Jeff Clark, the death of Laken Hope Riley, a junior on the dean’s list at Augusta University, looks to have been a “crime of opportunity” committed by “someone who woke up with bad intentions” on Friday.

Campus police announced that they are recommending charges against 26-year-old Athens resident Jose Antonio Ibarra for felony murder, false detention, kidnapping, and hiding the death of another person involved in Riley’s murder.

Ibarra’s bond was denied on Saturday morning, per jail records in Clarke County.

Riley was discovered dead on Thursday after jogging along a lake on the University of Georgia campus. The 22-year-old nursing student was identified on Friday morning by the Athens-Clarke County Coroner.

She died from blunt force trauma, according to an examination conducted on Friday, Clark said during the news conference on Friday.

Ibarra was placed under arrest, as the police chief declared on Friday. According to Clark, there were no signs that the case posed a continuous threat to the community.

According to the evidence, the murder was “a solo act,” Clark said, adding that while other persons had been detained by the police, Ibarra was the only one who had been arrested.

Ibarra’s brother is in state detention after being charged federally on Friday night with having a forged green card, according to a press release from the US Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Georgia.

According to the announcement, 29-year-old undocumented Venezuelan Diego Ibarra, who shares his brother’s nationality, is accused of possessing a false document and could spend up to 10 years behind bars.

Diego Ibarra was approached by an Athens-Clarke County police officer because, according to a federal affidavit, he fit the description of the individual who was being sought on Friday. It found out that the green card he gave the police was fake.

The College of Nursing campus in Athens, which is roughly 2.5 miles from the University of Georgia’s intramural grounds, saw its Friday sessions canceled by Augusta University as well.
