As part of its 100-year celebrations, Ducati has unveiled the Formula 73 — a meticulously crafted, limited-edition motorcycle that pays tribute to one of the most defining chapters in the Italian brand’s racing journey. With only 873 units slated for global production, the Formula 73 is both a collector’s item and a living reminder of Ducati’s racing DNA.

The motorcycle draws direct inspiration from the iconic 750 Super Sport Desmo of the early 1970s — a machine that helped establish Ducati as a dominant force in production-based racing.

The 1972 Imola Victory That Changed Ducati Forever

The origins of the Formula 73 can be traced back to the historic 1972 Imola 200 Miles race. At this landmark event, Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari secured a sensational victory aboard the 750 Imola Desmo, placing Ducati firmly on the global motorsport map.

This triumph was widely regarded as a turning point for the brand. It not only strengthened Ducati’s standing in production-derived racing but also laid the groundwork for what would later evolve into the Superbike World Championship.

One of the most significant technical innovations introduced during that era was desmodromic valve timing. First featured prominently in the 750 Super Sport Desmo, this engineering hallmark remains a defining characteristic of Ducati engines to this day — ensuring precise valve control and high-revving performance.

Design That Honors the 1973 Original

The Ducati Formula 73 faithfully references the visual identity of the 1973 model while integrating premium modern detailing.

The silver and aqua green colour scheme has been developed after extensive historical research by Ducati’s design team. A distinctive vertical gold stripe runs along the fuel tank — a nod to the unpainted strip seen on the original Imola race bike, which allowed riders to visually monitor fuel levels during competition.

While its aesthetics are rooted in the 1970s, the Formula 73 stands firmly on contemporary mechanical foundations.

Powering the motorcycle is an 803cc air-cooled Desmodue L-twin engine that complies with stringent Euro5+ emission norms. The engine produces 73 horsepower at 8,250 rpm, delivering a balance of classic character and modern reliability.

The exhaust system has been developed in collaboration with Termignoni, enhancing both performance and the distinctive Ducati soundtrack. A ride-by-wire throttle system ensures smoother and more precise power delivery.

The chassis is built around a steel trellis frame, paired with 17-inch spoked wheels wrapped in Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tyres. The Formula 73 also incorporates advanced rider aids, including:
