In a landmark development that challenges the narrative pushed by Make America Great Again (MAGA) hardliners, two major American corporations have appointed Indian-origin leaders as CEOs. The announcement comes at a time when the Donald Trump-led US administration has been intensifying restrictions on H-1B visas, which are crucial for highly skilled foreign professionals. These appointments highlight the growing footprint of Indian executives in global corporate leadership.
T-Mobile, one of the largest telecom companies in the United States, announced that Srinivas “Srini” Gopalan, aged 55, will officially assume the role of Chief Executive Officer on November 1. An alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad, Gopalan currently serves as T-Mobile’s Chief Operating Officer and will succeed Mike Sievert, who has been CEO since 2020 and will transition to the newly created role of Vice Chairman.
Sharing his excitement on LinkedIn, Gopalan wrote: “I am truly honored to be appointed as the future CEO of T-Mobile. I’ve always admired how this company fearlessly reinvented wireless services to serve customers in ways that once seemed impossible.”
Gopalan brings a diverse global experience, having started his career as a management trainee at Hindustan Unilever. He later held leadership roles at Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Capital One, and Deutsche Telekom. At Deutsche Telekom, he was instrumental in doubling business growth, expanding fiber networks to millions of households, and capturing record mobile market share in Germany.
At T-Mobile, he has been a key driver of innovation, overseeing projects in 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital transformation. Outgoing CEO Sievert described Gopalan as “highly skilled, extremely knowledgeable, and passionate,” expressing full confidence in his ability to take T-Mobile’s employee and customer experiences “to the next level.”
Meanwhile, in another significant corporate move, Molson Coors, the iconic Chicago-based beer company, has named Rahul Goyal, 49, as its new President and CEO effective October 1. Goyal succeeds Gavin Hattersley, who will remain in an advisory role until the end of the year. Having worked with Molson Coors for 24 years, Goyal’s deep understanding of the company makes him a natural choice for the top leadership role.
Originally from India, Goyal has worked across multiple geographies including the United States, United Kingdom, and India, managing Coors and Molson brands. He holds an engineering degree from Mysore and pursued further business studies in Denver. According to David Coors, chairman of Molson Coors’ board: “After an extensive CEO succession process, it was clear Rahul brought the right experience and vision to drive our next phase of growth.”
Accepting his new role, Goyal expressed his commitment to advancing the company’s legacy while embracing fresh challenges in the evolving global beer market.
These appointments come at a politically sensitive moment, as MAGA conservatives continue to scrutinize foreign-born professionals, often blaming them for taking away American jobs. Despite this rhetoric, Indian-origin leaders continue to rise to prominent positions in the United States.
Following the success stories of Sundar Pichai at Alphabet, Satya Nadella at Microsoft, and several other Fortune 500 executives of Indian descent, the elevation of Srinivas Gopalan and Rahul Goyal further cements the reputation of Indian-origin CEOs as transformative leaders shaping the corporate landscape of America.
