For jee advanced toppers, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has once again become the most popular choice, with IIT Delhi coming in second. IIT Bombay was selected by 73 of the top 100 rankers in jee advanced 2025, a consistent increase from 72 last year and 67 in 2023, according to the most recent counseling data published by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (josaa).
IIT Delhi has maintained its long-standing popularity despite a modest decline. The Delhi campus was selected by 19 of the top 100 rankers in 2025, as opposed to 23 in 2024 and 22 in 2023. The institute has continuously attracted between 19 and 32 top scorers over the past five years, solidifying its position as the second-most-preferred IIT.
Even if the NIRF ranks IIT Madras as India‘s top engineering school, it still comes in a far cry from the top three. Six of the top 100 students choose IIT Madras this year, the most in five years, compared to just two in 2024.
PREFERENCES OF THE TOP 100 RANKERS BY YEAR
- Institute 2025 2024 2023 2022 2021 2020
- IIT Bombay 73 72 67 68 62 58
- IIT Delhi 19 23 22 28 32 29
- IIT Madras 6 2 8 2 3 6
2025–2024 Institute 2020, 2023, 2022, and 2021
73 72 67 68 62 58 IIT Bombay
19 23 22 28 32 29 IIT Delhi
Madras IIT 6 2 8 2 3 6
IIT Bombay’s increasing dominance is evident from the data, as its percentage of the top 100 increased progressively from 58 in 2020 to over 70 in 2024 and 2025.
IIT Bombay leads once more with 755 admissions when examining the larger pool of the top 5000 JEE Advanced rankers, followed by IIT Delhi at 577 and IIT Madras at 478. Strong interest is still shown in other IITs as well:
- IIT Kharagpur: 517 students
- IIT Kanpur: 448 students
- IIT Roorkee: 429 students
- IIT Hyderabad: 222 students
IIT Kharagpur has 517 pupils.
Students at IIT Kanpur: 448
Students at IIT Roorkee: 429
222 students at IIT Hyderabad
Notable participation was found among the more recent campuses of IIT BHU Varanasi (258), IIT Guwahati (305), and IIT Indore (109).
However, top rankers still don’t enroll at smaller IITs in large numbers. IIT Jammu (4), IIT Goa (3), IIT Palakkad (1), IIT Dharwad (1), and IIT Bhillai (2) had just single-digit entries among the top 5000, whilst IIT Bhubaneswar (43), IIT Jodhpur (63), and IIT Ropar (120) scored modest numbers.
The data show that top scorers have a significant preference for IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, while IIT Madras and a few other institutions are gradually gaining ground. However, for the time being, the pattern confirms the two top IITs’ hegemony in influencing the decisions of India’s most talented engineering students.
