With an outstanding 91 percent placement rate, the first class of students from IIT Guwahati’s Mehta Family School of Data science and artificial intelligence (MFSDS & AI) has graduated.
The School was among the first in the IIT system to launch a specific undergraduate degree in data science and artificial intelligence when it was founded in 2021.
Set up in partnership with the Mehta Family Foundation, the inaugural cohort of students from the 2021–25 batch has now completed the programme.
According to IIT Guwahati’s official placement report, students received offers from some of the world’s leading companies, including google, Microsoft, and Warner Bros Discovery. Additionally, one member of the class will attend Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA, to continue their education.
AHEAD OF THE CURVE IN EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES
“By introducing a BTech in Data Science and AI in 2021, we were ahead of the curve,” said Professor Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, who expressed delight in the accomplishment.
He continued, “The successful placement of our very first batch validates both the demand for these skills and the quality of the programme we have built,” according to PTI.
According to Rahul Mehta, the founder of the Mehta Family Foundation, the outcomes are in line with the common goal that inspired the founding of the school.
“IIT Guwahati’s faculty’s commitment and students’ talent are demonstrated by the achievement of the first graduating class. In order to empower the upcoming generation of leaders in this revolutionary sector, we partnered to create the School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence,” he stated.
STUDENTS WORKED ON CUTTING-EDGE PROJECTS
The curriculum of the program placed a strong emphasis on research and application, and students worked on complex issues as deepfake detection, conversational AI, multimodal healthcare systems, robotics, huge language model automation, and federated learning over a one-year project component.
The school’s head, Professor Ratnajit Bhattacharjee, emphasized the variety of student achievements, saying, “We take satisfaction in the variety of results. While some graduates are entering advanced research, others are taking on leadership-track positions in industry.
He added, “That flexibility shows the strength of the programme in preparing adaptable, world-class problem solvers.”
MTech, PhD, and online BSc (Hons) courses are among the undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate programs that the school currently offers.
The Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, which attracts students from all over India and overseas, further solidifies IIT Guwahati’s standing as a center for innovation in the domains of artificial intelligence and data-driven technology.
