Lisa Su, the CEO of AMD, has allayed concerns that AI will lead to a large-scale loss of jobs. Su, who heads the roughly $300 billion US chip company, thinks AI will enhance human labor rather than replace it, despite other industry leaders’ concerns that it could displace entry-level positions. She addressed worries about AI and jobs in a recent interview with Wired, saying that people are still essential to the advancement of technology.
“There are two ways to think about artificial intelligence,” Su stated. There are two options: either proceed as quickly as you can while using the appropriate lens to analyze the data, or hold back since it can be risky. I strongly belong to the second group. We will continue to require a sizable population, in my opinion. Since engineers are the ultimate judges of our engineering, we continue to hire more and more of them.
Lisa Su on the State of AI Today
Su explained that although she thinks artificial general intelligence (AGI) will advance, she does not anticipate AI to outsmart humans. She emphasized that the humans who create and direct AI will determine its actual worth and expressed disinterest in doomsday scenarios. Su asserts that AI is still not “great” and is primarily used for mundane or everyday activities.
AI has two main directions, she explained. One is to increase productivity by automating monotonous chores so that people can concentrate on more intricate and significant work. The other is tackling complex issues at a speed and scale that was previously unthinkable. Su used the design of chips as an example, pointing out that AI might cut the three-year process down to six months.
Su likened the AI revolution to the Industrial Revolution and the internet. She thinks that because AI has a direct impact on productivity and problem-solving, it is more fundamental than the internet. According to her, AI will become as ubiquitous as the internet once humanity has completely embraced it, and its potential should be assessed not by its present capabilities but by what it will make possible in the future. Although she accepted that there might be obstacles in the road, she was certain that they could be overcome.
Regarding superintelligence, Su said that while society is still in its infancy, the thought of AI augmenting human capabilities is an inspiring prospect. She emphasized how AI has enormous potential to revolutionize the healthcare industry, from patient care to medication discovery. Su thinks AI might make the healthcare system more effective and efficient by removing trial-and-error procedures and enhancing results.
Su continued by saying, “I would bet on humanity being OK,” reinforcing her conviction that AI will advance humankind rather than pose a danger to jobs.
