The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), located in Bengaluru, has won the top rank in the law category of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 for the eighth year in a row. The list of top-performing schools in 17 different categories was made public by the Ministry of Education.

This year’s list features NLSIU in second place, followed by the National Law University (NLU) in Delhi, and NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad in third.

AN INCREASE IN LAW COLLEGES’ COMPETITION

Notable changes have occurred in this year’s rating, with Kolkata’s West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) rising to fourth place.

Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar, has secured fifth place. Interestingly, IIT Kharagpur, which ranked seventh in 2024, climbed to the fourth position this year, highlighting the growing prominence of multidisciplinary institutions in legal education.

As India’s top law schools continue to advance in teaching, research, inclusion, and graduation results, the rankings show fierce rivalry among them.

PRIOR YEARS’ PERFORMANCE

By raising its score to 80.52 points in 2023 from 78.00 in 2022, NLSIU increased its advantage. NALSAR Hyderabad moved up to third place with 73.76 points, up from fourth the year before, while NLU Delhi held onto second place with 73.91 points. WBNUJS Kolkata improved as well, rising from fifth to fourth.

These changes show that the best universities are constantly raising the bar for their research and academic programs.

Participation and Parameters

Teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and diversity; and peer perception are some of the factors that go into the NIRF rankings. Each category has a different weighting for these factors.

The number of higher education institutions participating in the NIRF exercise has increased dramatically, from 3,565 in 2016 to 14,163 in 2025.

Additionally, the categories have grown from four in 2016 to seventeen in 2025, making it one of the most thorough evaluations of higher education in India.
