The National Medical Commission (NMC) has officially updated the NEET UG 2025 seat matrix for the upcoming academic year 2025–2026. Following the renewal of existing MBBS seats and the addition of newly approved ones, India now boasts an impressive total of 1,26,600 MBBS seats as of October 10, 2025. This includes state and private medical colleges, excluding premier institutions like AIIMS and JIPMER.
The NMC has authorized 9,075 new MBBS seats across the country, reflecting its continued efforts to expand access to medical education and bridge the doctor-to-patient gap. Throughout the year, the NEET UG 2025 seat matrix has undergone multiple revisions due to variations in seat approvals, renewal delays, and regulatory clearances from medical colleges across states.
All NEET UG 2025 aspirants are advised to carefully review the latest seat matrix and follow the NMC’s updated schedule to ensure they do not miss any crucial updates regarding medical college admissions.
Major Changes in State Medical Colleges
Among the notable updates, Santhiram Medical College in Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh, has increased its intake capacity from 150 to 250 MBBS seats. Additionally, Anna Gowri Medical College and Hospital has received approval to begin its operations with 150 MBBS seats, providing more options for students from the southern region.
Other states like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka have also expanded their medical education infrastructure by adding new MBBS seats across various institutions. This expansion is expected to open up thousands of opportunities for students appearing in the NEET UG 2025 examination.
Meanwhile, in a notable reduction, the Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Delhi has lost 150 MBBS seats from its existing seat matrix, reflecting adjustments made due to regulatory and institutional changes.
Detailed Seat Matrix Update by NMC
In September 2025, the National Medical Commission made significant modifications to the seat matrix by adding 6,850 new MBBS seats while simultaneously removing 1,056 seats because of ongoing court cases, pending approvals, and renewal delays. Some institutions also faced exclusions due to unresolved compliance issues.
Roughly ten days later, another revision was released — this time adding 7,375 new seats while reducing 456 seats. This adjustment came in the wake of the Union Cabinet’s approval for adding 10,000 MBBS seats under Phase 3 of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) expansion plan, aimed at strengthening medical education and Healthcare delivery across India.
NEET UG 2025: MCC Round 3 Counseling Extended
The Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) has officially extended the Round 3 counseling choice-filling deadline for NEET UG 2025 until October 13, 2025. This extension offers another opportunity for candidates who have not yet locked their college preferences.
Aspirants are urged to visit the official MCC website — mcc.nic.in — to complete their choice filling before the deadline. The Round 3 seat allotment results are expected to be announced by October 15, 2025.
The revised NEET UG 2025 seat matrix reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to expand medical education capacity and ensure equitable access for students nationwide. With over 9,000 new seats added, the upcoming academic year is set to be one of the most competitive yet promising for India’s future doctors.
