Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, the governor of Kerala, said Sunday that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is the nation’s first real attempt to decolonize its educational system. He said that even decades after independence, India had been maintaining a “colonial mindset” when speaking at the Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas-organized national education convention, “Gyan Sabha,” in Kochi.
“Unbeknownst to us, the earlier education system changed the way we think, and it permeated our family lives,” Arlekar said. Calling the new policy a chance to escape colonial domination, he urged the populace to welcome the changes it brought about.
The Governor emphasized the importance of NEP 2020 and stated that the changes implemented by the Narendra Modi administration were “different from what we have been taught for all these years.” He went on to say that, if the country embraces and applies the strategy in its genuine spirit, India has the ability to regain its status as a Vishwa Guru, or world teacher, which it held at the time of independence.
“It was restricted to political freedom when we gained our independence. Now the challenge is whether we are ready to be part of a broader transformation,” he said.
Speaking to the audience, which included Mohan Bhagwat, the leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Arlekar emphasized that the goal of Viksit Bharat was to advance society as a whole, not simply the economy.
