When it comes to Artificial Intelligence and Data Science education in India, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) often dominate the spotlight; however, a growing number of non-IIT institutions (NITs, IIITs and private colleges) are making strides in these cutting-edge fields.
The top ten non-IIT colleges that are influencing AI and data science in India are examined in detail in this article. We will examine the characteristics that set these schools apart, including infrastructure, research output, placement statistics, and national rankings. Here is a list of some of the options available to students.

National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli
While NIT Tiruchirappalli does not provide a distinct undergraduate course or department in data science, they do have a postgraduate section called data analysis. The National Testing Agency (NTA) administers the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main), which is the basis for admission to NIT Trichy’s undergraduate programs, including BTech and BArch. Admission is determined by a centralized method.
Candidates must meet the qualifying requirements based on their Class 12 results and qualify for JEE Main. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), which is in charge of admissions to NITs, IITs, IIITs, and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs), is in charge of managing seat allocation. After the JoSAA rounds, any remaining vacant seats are filled through special rounds conducted by the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB). For more details, candidates can refer to the official websites of JEE Main, JoSAA, and CSAB.
Vellore Institute of Technology
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering are two of the BTech programs offered by the VIT. In addition to the aforementioned, VIT offers a distinct BTech course in data science for computer science and engineering. Data visualization, cybersecurity, computer graphics, natural language processing, soft computing, and open source programming are just a few of the topics covered in this course. Students can go to the official website to learn more about the course.
Candidates’ performance in the most recent qualifying exam or pertinent entrance exam determines their admission to courses at VIT Vellore. For BTech programs, the institute uses VITEEE; for MTech admissions, it uses VITMEE; and for PhD enrollment, it uses VITREE.
Jadavpur University
MTech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science is one of the courses offered by Jadavpur University’s MTech in CSE program. The University offers this evening curriculum for three years. In addition, there is another MTech program in computer technology that focuses on data science and artificial intelligence. This evening curriculum lasts for six semesters. For the engineering course in Jadavpur University, admissions are done on the basis of a general merit rank in WBJEE through WBJEE counselling.
Additionally, the university offers a six-month certificate program in data science and artificial intelligence. This course, which costs Rs 20,000, is available to students who have done mathematics in Class 12. Data science, Python programming, AI, and ML will all be taught to the students. Thirty students are enrolled in the batch overall. For more information on the course, students can visit–cmaterju.in/ai-ds-course or can email at contact@cmaterju.in.
S.R.M. Institute of Science and Technology
At its Kattankulathur location, SRM Institute of Science and Technology provides a BTech in Computer Science and Engineering with a Data Science concentration. The program has a sanctioned intake of 120 students and lasts for four years. The cost of tuition is Rs 4,75,000 per year. Candidates must be Indian nationals or have PIO/OCI status in order to be eligible. They must also have passed or be taking the 10+2 test, which requires physics and math in addition to one extra subject like biology, chemistry, or computer science. Performance on the SRMJEEE (UG) entrance exam determines admission.
Anna University
With an emphasis on topics including machine learning, cloud computing, computer vision, and the Internet of Things, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering provides undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate programs. The department has more than 1200 publications, 793 undergraduate students, and 33 staff members. All program admissions are handled by a single window admissions system that is supervised by Anna University. Merit lists or ranks are produced based on the higher secondary marks, which are scaled to a maximum of 200. These rankings are then used to schedule counseling sessions.
In order to support AI and data science advancements in fields like healthcare, autonomous vehicles, weather forecasting, and ocean monitoring, the Department launched CAInDRA—Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Data Science Research & Applications—in April 2022.
