A continuous geographical disparity in IIT admissions is highlighted by the fact that the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay examination zone has the highest percentage of top ranks in JEE Advanced 2025.
Data released by the JEE Advanced exam organizing institutes from the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) shows that 145 candidates from the Bombay zone placed in the Top-500 ranks (29%), closely followed by those from the Hyderabad zone (139 ranks, 27.8%) and Delhi zone (111 ranks, 22.2%). Only 21% of the Top-500 candidates were shared by the other four zones, while 79% of them were besieged by these three zones together.
When examining the highest ranks, the difference becomes more pronounced. Roorkee managed one of the Top 10 applicants, while Bombay, Delhi, and Hyderabad each had three. The zones of Guwahati, Kanpur, and Kharagpur were completely absent from the Top 10. Within the Top-100, the Bombay and Delhi zones each produced 31 candidates; Hyderabad contributed 23, Roorkee 6, Kharagpur 5, and Kanpur 4. Guwahati did not place a single candidate in the Top-100.
The Roorkee zone has 53 students in the Top-500 (10.6%) further down the list, followed by Kharagpur with 32 (6.4%) and Kanpur with 17 (3.4%). Out of the seven zones, the Guwahati zone had the poorest result, placing in the Top-500 with just three students (0.6%).
Education experts frequently cite the concentration of large coaching centers in areas like Bombay, Hyderabad, and Delhi, which provide students in these regions a significant competitive edge, even though the research does not explain the reasons for this concentration of good performance. Concerns regarding equitable access and opportunities throughout India‘s examination zones are brought up by the ongoing skew.
