5.1-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Assam, No Casualties Reported

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Assam’s Morigaon district early Monday morning, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at around 4:00 am and did not result in any reported loss of life or property damage.

As per the NCS, the earthquake’s epicentre was located at latitude 26.37° North and longitude 92.29° East, with a depth of approximately 50 kilometres.

The tremors were felt across several parts of central Assam, including Morigaon and neighbouring districts such as Kamrup Metropolitan, Nagaon, East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, and Jorhat. Residents in Guwahati, the state capital, also reported feeling the quake.

Reports further indicated that the tremors were experienced in parts of West Bengal and other northeastern states. Neighbouring countries including Nepal and Bhutan also felt the impact of the earthquake.

Although no injuries or damage have been reported so far, the sudden shaking caused panic among residents, with many people fleeing their homes in fear.

India’s northeastern region lies in a highly seismically active zone, making it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes of varying intensity.
