Centre Plans to Revoke Detention of Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk Months After Leh Unrest

Months after the unrest that shook the town of Leh in September 2025, the Central government has decided to revoke the detention of well-known climate activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk. The decision was announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which said the move is intended to restore stability in the region and promote meaningful dialogue among stakeholders in ladakh.

According to the government statement, Wangchuk had been detained under the provisions of the National Security Act (NSA). The detention order was issued on September 26, 2025 by the District Magistrate of Leh as a measure to maintain public order following a tense situation in the region.

Officials said that the peaceful town of Leh experienced a serious Law and Order challenge on September 24, 2025. Authorities reported that the disturbances led to several injuries and multiple fatalities, prompting swift action from the administration to prevent further escalation.

The Ministry of Home Affairs noted that Wangchuk has already served nearly half of the detention period permitted under the National Security Act. After reviewing the circumstances and the current situation in Ladakh, the government decided that revoking the detention would help ease tensions and encourage constructive engagement.

Earlier, while defending the detention before the Supreme Court of India, the Centre had described Sonam Wangchuk as the “chief provocateur” behind the unrest that erupted in Leh. According to the government’s position, the violence that occurred on September 24 resulted in four deaths and several injuries.

The Centre had also argued that once Wangchuk was detained, the situation in the region gradually stabilized. Authorities maintained that all legal procedures required under the National Security Act were carefully followed during the detention process.

At the same time, government officials acknowledged that maintaining long-term peace in Ladakh requires cooperation between authorities and local communities. Over the past few months, the administration has been engaging with community leaders, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to understand their concerns and demands.

According to the government, several meetings and consultations have taken place in an effort to address the aspirations and issues raised by the people of Ladakh. Officials believe that dialogue and cooperation are essential to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.

However, the government also expressed concern that the ongoing atmosphere of bandhs, demonstrations, and protests has negatively affected the social and economic environment of Ladakh.

Authorities pointed out that prolonged disruptions have impacted various sections of society. Students preparing for exams, young job seekers, local businesses, tourism operators, and visitors to the region have all been affected by the unrest and uncertainty.

In its statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs reiterated that the government remains committed to restoring an atmosphere of peace, stability, and trust in Ladakh. Officials emphasized that maintaining a calm environment will help ensure that discussions between different groups remain productive.

The government stated:

“In furtherance of this objective, and after due consideration, the government has decided to revoke the detention of Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect by exercising the powers available under the National Security Act.”

Officials expressed hope that the decision will create a more positive atmosphere for dialogue and cooperation between the administration and local communities.

The Centre also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Ladakh and addressing the region’s long-standing concerns. Authorities said that discussions will continue through established institutional frameworks and consultative platforms.

One of the key mechanisms mentioned by the government is the High-Powered Committee on Ladakh, which has been tasked with examining various demands related to governance, development, and safeguards for the region’s cultural and environmental heritage.

Government representatives said that issues raised by Ladakh’s residents will be addressed through constructive engagement within this framework and other appropriate forums.

Sonam Wangchuk, known for his work in environmental innovation and Education reform, has long been a prominent voice advocating for sustainable development and ecological protection in the fragile Himalayan region.

His supporters argue that his activism focuses on protecting Ladakh’s unique environment and cultural identity, while authorities previously maintained that the protests associated with the unrest created serious law and order challenges.

With the revocation of his detention, observers expect a new phase of dialogue between community leaders and government representatives. Many hope that the decision will reduce tensions and encourage cooperation aimed at addressing Ladakh’s development and governance concerns.
