In a major counter-terrorism operation underscoring heightened security concerns in the national capital, the Delhi Police Special Cell has detained eight individuals for allegedly planning a significant terror strike in India. Investigators say the dismantled module had suspected links to extremist organizations operating out of Bangladesh and possible connections to Pakistan’s intelligence establishment.
According to senior officials familiar with the probe, the group was allegedly acting under the direction of foreign-based handlers and was in the preparatory stages of executing a large-scale terrorist attack. Authorities described the arrests as a “preventive breakthrough” aimed at neutralizing a serious threat before it could materialize.
Arrests Across Tamil Nadu and West Bengal
Six of the accused — identified as Mizanur Rahman, Mohammad Shabat, Umar, Mohammad Litan, Mohammad Shahid, and Mohammed Ujjal — were apprehended from garment manufacturing units in the Tiruppur region of Tamil Nadu. Two additional suspects were detained from West Bengal as part of the coordinated operation conducted with assistance from local law enforcement agencies.
Preliminary findings indicate that several of the detained individuals are suspected Bangladeshi nationals who were allegedly residing in India under false identities. Investigators claim counterfeit Aadhaar cards were recovered, which were purportedly used to conceal their real identities and facilitate local employment.
The suspects are being brought to Delhi for further interrogation and judicial proceedings as agencies expand the scope of the investigation.
High Alert in Delhi Following Intelligence Inputs
The arrests came shortly after security agencies placed Delhi under high alert based on intelligence inputs suggesting a possible terror strike in the capital. Sources indicated that sensitive religious and historical landmarks could have been targeted.
Investigators are examining whether the module had any operational overlap with threats linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a Pakistan-based militant outfit that has been implicated in previous attacks on Indian soil. Intelligence inputs had warned of a potential improvised explosive device (IED) attack in and around high-footfall areas, including zones near the Red Fort and parts of Chandni Chowk.
Security deployments were intensified across strategic sites, including metro stations, marketplaces, and prominent places of worship, as a precautionary measure.
Digital Trail and Seized Evidence Under Examination
According to officials, the Special Cell’s investigation initially stemmed from suspicious online posts allegedly promoting extremist ideologies and anti-India propaganda. Acting on digital leads, officers tracked communication patterns that eventually pointed toward a Tamil Nadu-based network.
During the operation, authorities seized eight mobile phones and sixteen SIM cards. Forensic teams are currently analyzing the devices for digital evidence, encrypted communications, financial transactions, and potential links to other operatives.
Officials emphasized that cyber-forensic analysis will play a critical role in mapping the network’s structure, funding sources, and cross-border communication channels.
“Free Kashmir” Posters Triggered Deeper Probe
The case gained momentum after provocative posters carrying “Free Kashmir” slogans surfaced in more than ten locations across Delhi, including within parts of the Delhi Metro network. The posters reportedly contained inflammatory references to Kashmir, raising concerns about coordinated propaganda efforts.
Following a detailed forensic and intelligence-based review of the posters’ origins, investigators traced the network’s operational footprints beyond Delhi, eventually uncovering the alleged Tiruppur-linked module.
Officials described the posters as a potential attempt to incite unrest and test security preparedness in the capital.
Parallels with Previous Terror Modules
Security agencies have drawn comparisons between this case and a recent investigation involving a suspected module with alleged links to a university in Faridabad. In that instance, controversial posters in Jammu and Kashmir led investigators to a broader network that included individuals employed in academic and medical institutions.
Authorities believe such propaganda tactics may serve as reconnaissance tools to gauge law enforcement response times and public reaction before attempting more serious acts.
Ongoing Investigation into Cross-Border Links
Officials are continuing to examine the financial and logistical channels that may connect the detained individuals to extremist handlers abroad. Investigators are probing suspected ties to Bangladesh-based radical outfits and are assessing whether any indirect support or guidance originated from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), as alleged in preliminary intelligence assessments.
Law enforcement agencies are coordinating with central intelligence units to determine whether additional operatives remain at large. Financial transaction trails, travel histories, and digital communications are under scrutiny to identify any broader conspiracy.
Security Agencies Call Operation a Preventive Success
Senior officials characterized Sunday’s operation as a significant preventive action that may have averted a potentially devastating attack. They stressed that investigations remain ongoing and that further arrests cannot be ruled out.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity while avoiding the spread of unverified information on Social Media platforms.
As India continues to confront evolving security threats, this latest development highlights the increasing role of coordinated intelligence gathering, digital surveillance, and inter-state cooperation in counter-terror operations.
The coming days are expected to bring further clarity as forensic findings and interrogation details emerge, potentially revealing the full extent of the alleged terror network and its international linkages.
