Government Signs ₹2,095 Crore Deal to Equip T-90 Tanks with INVAR Anti-Tank Missiles

New Delhi, November 13, 2025: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a landmark contract worth ₹2,095.70 crore with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of INVAR Anti-Tank Missiles under the Buy (Indian) category. The signing ceremony took place at South Block in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, senior MoD officials, and representatives from BDL.

The newly inked deal aims to boost the firepower of the Indian Army’s T-90 tank fleet, which forms the backbone of India’s Armoured Corps. The INVAR missile, a highly advanced laser-guided weapon system, is designed for precision strikes and high hit probability, giving India’s tank units a decisive edge in modern battlefield scenarios.

INVAR Missiles to Enhance T-90 Tank Lethality

The induction of these indigenous anti-tank missiles will significantly enhance the combat capability and lethality of T-90 tanks, ensuring that Indian armoured regiments remain battle-ready for high-intensity mechanised warfare. Officials said the system would give tank units the ability to engage enemy armour at extended ranges with exceptional accuracy.

“The INVAR system represents a leap in our anti-armour capability. With this addition, our T-90 tanks will be more lethal and agile in future battlefield conditions,” a senior defence official said.

Boost to India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat Initiative

The contract is also a reflection of the government’s sustained focus on indigenisation and self-Reliance in defence manufacturing. By partnering with Bharat Dynamics Limited—a leading Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU)—the MoD has reinforced its commitment to achieving Aatmanirbharta in defence production.

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision to strengthen domestic manufacturing ecosystems, promote indigenous R&D, and reduce dependency on foreign defence imports. The deal will also encourage private and public sector collaboration in developing high-end missile and guidance technologies.

Key Features of the INVAR Anti-Tank Missile

  • Type: Laser-guided, tandem warhead anti-tank missile
  • Range: Effective engagement up to 5 km
  • Platform: Designed for T-90 main battle tanks
  • Capabilities: High precision, fire-and-forget system, superior penetration against reactive armour

The INVAR missile is known for its ability to strike heavily armoured targets with pinpoint accuracy, even in complex battlefield environments. Its deployment on T-90 platforms ensures enhanced protection and superior strike capabilities against enemy armour formations.

Strategic Significance

This procurement marks another major milestone in the government’s efforts to modernise India’s armoured forces. With rising regional security challenges, especially along the northern borders, the deal underscores India’s intent to maintain strategic readiness and technological superiority.

Officials also stated that the contract will provide a major boost to employment generation and industrial growth within India’s defence ecosystem, as production and assembly will be carried out domestically by BDL in coordination with multiple local vendors.

Conclusion

The ₹2,095 crore INVAR missile deal not only strengthens the Indian Army’s offensive and defensive capabilities but also reaffirms the government’s longterm vision for an independent, self-reliant defence sector. By empowering indigenous industry and reinforcing mechanised warfare readiness, India is taking yet another firm step toward becoming a global leader in defence innovation.
